I'm about to buy a 93 Maxima GXE...any tips for me?

I'm looking at a 93 Max (auto trans). I test drove the vehicle yesterday and it seems like a really good car (so far). I'm going to get it inspected by a mechanic tomorrow before I make the final decision. I've been reading consumer reviews and warnings for this vehicle. Most people rate it very well over-all, but there have been a number of reviews which mentioned the following mechanical problems:

- Transmission (but didn't say specifically what the problem was)

- Window regulators

- Broken exhaust manifold studs

Is there anything else in particular that I should be aware of, or that I should have the machanic check for? Also, should a good mechanic be able to see signs of these problems if they are about to happen, or are these the type of problems that happen without warming?

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

David

By the way, the car has 150,000 km (about 93,000 miles).

I'd say you're on the right track having your mechanic inspect it over just to be sure before you buy. He'll be able to point out anything that's coming up soon (exhaust work, etc.). But be on the safe side and don't forget to allow extra $$$ for a timing belt/front engine seals/water pump replacement when you take ownership unless the current owner has records that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that was all done.

I can't say what the mention on the transmission would have been about other than making sure when the fluid is changed to use *genuine* Nissanmatic D automatic transmission fluid. Perhaps NissTech has more information on this?

The broken studs you'll hear when you start the engine cold. It will likely sound like tapping valves but if your mechanic uses an inspection mirror and light, he/she should have no problem seeing if any studs are snapped.

The window regulators and exhaust studs just happen when/if they happen.

'94 Max here in Canader.

I bought it at 145,000 km. Worked great for 50,000 km. Then all hell broke loose (I'm sure mine is the exception, but you never know). In the last 50,000 km I've had to replace...

The manifold gasket, fuel rail, alternator x2, Auto tranny x2, starter, Left rear caliper x2, drivers seat rails, air conditioner compressor (not replaced), rear radio speakers cut in and out etc. can't think of the rest but there was more.

For 2 1/2 years nothing but fun and dealer maintenance, the last 3 1/2 years it's been one thing or another continuously.

___________ BTW Can I get a junk yard compressor and install it myself, then get a garage to fill it up with R134A? There's none in it now.
