Nissian Quest rear drum brake question

Hey guys. I am replacing the rear drum brakes on my quest. In my repair book, it tells me to adjust the star adjuster until the brakes drag on the drum a bit when it's turned, and then move the star out again so that the drum turns freely. Is that right? Why adjust the brakes out, and then in?

Also, when rotating the drum to determine if the brakes are dragging .. do you adjust the brake until the drum is hard to turn, or when you just barely feel the brake grabbing the drum? Thanks in advance .. this is my first drum replacement in ages (and the original drum replacement I did on my 70 chevy was much easier to do)...

It's so you know the shoes are actually close to the drum. I normally adjust the shoes till the drums will -just- slip over the shoes. Sometimes trying to reverse the star wheel against the -one way- ratchet with the drums in place (you have to push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel) can be a bitch to do.

Well if you didn't adjust the shoes until they were close to the drums in some way, you didn't do it right! :-) That said they don't have to be

-perfectly- adjusted, just get them close and the self adjuster will take over.

Don't go too close on the Quest. There's a known, Quest specific issue where the rear drums will lock up solid after driving less that a mile if you go too close. Leave them loose, backup and pump the break to adjust.
