What is the EGR system?

Hello.

My check engine light was going on intermittently for the past several months. I just had the dealer check it out and they said the diagnostic machine found that the EGR system failed and it was a hose that they replaced. What exactly does the EGR system do?

Recirculates exhaust gasses back into the engine to be reburned.
