2001 max 5 speed, trouble with reverse

Hi, I'm having prblems getting my shifter into reverse. sometimes the problem is when I first start the car. if I go to back up, I can't get it into reverse, it feels like there is a wall there. and other times. I may be running the car for a while already, then pull into a parking space, and go to reverse to straighten out. I can't get it into reverse. has anyone else had this problem? any idea what the fix might be?

thanks for the advise, one aother question though. my car is at 13,000 miles. so it woudl still be under factory warrenty (assuming the trans. oil resiviour isn't low) if it was a problem with the transmission itself would I just bring it to a nissan dealer? I didn't get my car from a dealer but rather private party. do I have to do anything to get this warrenty in my name? or will it just transfer with the title for 36,000 miles?

Here's some general comments on your problem: If the shifter doesn't go into reverse, let the clutch back out, then in again and try reverse again. This will give the synchronizers another chance to get the teeth realigned so you can get into gear. You also might try to change the gearbox oil. I'm not sure if your car takes automatic trans fluid or gearbox oil, but you need to verify that. Your clutch slave cylinder may need more fluid. It may be low and not allowing the clutch to fully engage. Gear grinding can be a symptom of low slave cylinder oil. If this doesn't help, you need to take it to a tranny shop. Hopefully they won't have to drop the tranny and open it up. I don't think there's any external adjustment to this transmission.

Just take it in. They should honor the warranty.

FWIW - I had a similar problem w/ my 97 SE 5 speed. Took the boot off from around the shifter and peered down to inspect the linkage and found some substance that looked like dried up mud around the hinge points. I wire brushed it off, vacuumed out the dust, and oiled w/ light machine oil. It's been fine since then. I think bits of crud were fouling the ball joint.

YMMV.
