Check Engine light reader.. want to get one....

02 GLE I'm thinking of getting an ODB2 diagnostic reader for my Max, so I dont have to keep paying $30 to the mechanic every time it goes off. Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap, effective reader? Also, where can I get explanation of manufacturer specific error codes?

Walmart has a $99 one that will read most codes.

Or go to the local autozone and they'll use their reader for free.

Or you can follow a sequence of circus-like steps and have the code blinked out to you via the CEL.

96 Max GLE, 120k

Check on E bay,,I got one a few months ago from an outfit in Florida for 20 bucks including shipping,,,it works fine, and resets the code to boot if you want.

or you could take it to a person/shop that knows how to interpret the scan tool data and diagnose the problem so the check engine light will not come on anymore.

wow, now there is an idea...

Is that possible with an '02?

Dave

Yup - doesn't work on 00s and 01s... but works on 02s and 03s... its a funky procedure though, press accelerator to WOT, turn key, yada yada yada (or something similar)... not as simple as the 4th Gen ECU screw.
