Maxima with a hitch

Just bought this 97MAX with a class 1 hitch on it. The owner said he used it to carry bikes but I saw a boat at his house too. So if he did use the car to haul a boat, would it damage the engine or shorten its lifespan in any way? Thanks.

How big a boat ?

The transmission is the likely issue. Check the fluid and see if it is clear and red, or brown and burnt.

It's a speed boat or fishing boat from the look of it. It's not that big but I don't know much about boats so can't really descript it.

Thanks. Will do so when I change the fluid.

OK... There's a _big_ difference in weight between an aluminum bass boat with a little fishing motor and a fiberglass speedboat with a

150hp outboard. I would not worry about a fishing boat, a speedboat might be an issue, might not.

BTW, I believe the '97 Maxima's towing capacity max) was 1000 pounds. A typical aluminum bass boat weights at least that much even if you don't take the weight of the trailer into account.
