New Catalytic Converter at 70K miles?

to a local mechanic who said the P0420 MIL code means I neeed a new Catalytic Converter. Infiniti wants like 700.00 for the a new cat since the car is not still under dealer warranty. Could it be this problem:

That could be the problem but a bad O2 sensor could cause the same thing and fool the computer into thinking the cat is bad (and give crappy mileage etc). I'd be checking the exhaust reading before and after the cat to see if it's really dead before I replaced it and/or scope/check the O2 sensors themselves to see what their output looks like? People think if the code says -x- they need to buy -x- and it will be fixed. It would be nice in a perfect world but....

WHat the computer does is check the readings before and after the cat to see if it's working right. If it gets a garbage reading from the sensors, it can come to the wrong conclusion.

You are still under warranty. Cat and ECM carry an EPA mandated 8yr 80k mile warranty

Your "mechanic" does not know what he is talking about.

Take it to the dealership and have them flash the ECM with new data and all will be fine,and it does not need a new Cat

Can we believe this, a Nissan mechanic does not know what he is talking about?? Good grief, what's the world coming to???

Catalytic converter are not use Platnum any more ! Toyota found a newer Rear Earth Elements in China fewer years back, That year Toyota cut price of the car, and GM and Ford follow the suite. If you want exact date, and article, I can find for you.
