1998 306 1.6xs air con problem

Jun 18, 2005 5 Replies

I have recently bought a 306 1.6xs 1998, how ever have noticed that the air con does not seem to work, what is this likely to be, as the weather is getting hotter, and i need it. I turn it on, the green light comes on, but i dont see a difference in revs, it sounds like nothing happens when it is switched on.

Any help considered

is this pricey?

Thanks

Get it regassed at your local AirCon specialist. Should cost about one hour's labour (£40).

If that doesn't cure it, then you have a real fault - AirCon specialist above will be able to advise.

And as it's a 306, we all know what that fault will be!

Condenser corrosion? That's what happened to ours last year at about 6 years old. New condenser plus fitting & re-gas cost £245 in total.

Do they go on 406s in the same way?

No. On a 306, the normal fault is the pipes that run from the compressor. They are fixed to the body under the radiator and corrode where the fixings are. Easy enough to change (always renew all the seals) but will happen again eventually. I have heard about a radiator place (Sercks?) that do/did a rubber eqivilent pipe for roughly the same price. Either way you need to take it to a aircon specialist to find out where the leak is. Could just need a recharge!
