306 1.9 TDI Smoking on acceleration

dirty oilfilter and air filter also replace the diesel filter and give it a good oil change, then give it a run round the m25 if you live near it.as that will help i done one on sunday with the same proplem and i did all that to it and the smoke went away chris addlestone surrey

hmmmmm.... didnt think it would be somethig as simple as that ? but nice 1, i will give that a go at the weekend (will keep me off the landy for once) and the wife can take it for a spin :)

It often is a good idea to start with a service. Replacing the oil and all three filters gives it thicker oil that will not get past the piston rings and valve guides as easily. Changing the air and fuel filters removes a slight strangle on the supply of fuel and air and it all burns a lot cleaner.

Once you notice it running a lot smoother you can take it out for a good thrashing and blow all the accumulated muck out. It's best to do this at night when there aren't any following cars, unless you are the kind that doesn't feel embarassed at leaving a smoke screen . Once you have the engine up to normal running temp accellerate hard keeping it in as low a gear as possible.

The place that does my MOT says they get some cars that have been treated gently and produce great black plumes when they do the smoke test.

Ah yes, the Italian tune up. Something I always do on my run to the MOT station if I'm driving a diesel.

If a TD is driven gently round town, thei first time you put your foot down, you blow all the accumulated crud out of the exhaust. this results in the thick black smoke. Certainly on the way to an MOT (and from time to time anyway) it is worth finding an empty bit of road where you can floor the pedal in second, and leave it there for 20 seconds or so. You will see the black smoke appear and then clear. It will be better to drive afterwards too.

so give it pedal to metal tretment, and the smoke should go away.

The only problem is, i dont see my wife treating it gently in the first place, she only knows 2 positions on the accelerator, on and off :)

But its worth trying changing all filters and oil and see what happens then ? may even start using less diesel than my Landy too ?
