605 powersteering

I have a 605 2,5 D Turbo with a powersteering, which power adjust to the velocity of the car. Currently this adjusting systems seems to live its own live. Sometimes I need a lot of force to steer the car and then suddenly the steering is nearly done without any force. When this particulairy happens in a curve, you can imagine what happen. Does anybody know how this system functions and where to find the electronic and hydraulic components in the car?

Can't help a deal, but his sounds a lot like a problem I had on a granada when the power steering fluid was leaking. I found it safer to drain it altogether and use muscle power rather than go through that unpredictable stage you describe.

Hi Ron, Sounds like the "normal readjust" after a failure. The system drops down to lowest steering force for about 20 to 40 seconds and then returns to normal function. Mostly the failure is because the velocity sensor isn't working (faulty cable?). On early models the sensor is beneath the speedo cable. Later models (after 1993) have no speedo cable, but maybe the sensor is stil there. To have a look at the amount and quality of the power steering fluid is a good idea too. How is the quality of the power steering pump belt?

If the failure is continuous, then the dealer can check for the fault code. Unfortunatelly there is no continuous memory, so if the fault isn't showing, there is no fault code to be read.
