Alternator?

Sounds like a major alternator fault or an earth fault.

More like an alternator, bear in mind a diesel does not need power to function, unless you have a fancy TDI with electronic injector system. (You don't)

Get the alternator tested.

Not completely correct as the stop solenoid requires power all the time to keep things going. Don't know how far the volts need to drop till it closes though.

Most likely is that the brushes have worn out. A cheap fix if this is the case.

I must confess to learning about diesels on tractors, so I am not familiar with stop solenoids, but don't they require voltage to activate open and closed, I think once they are open they do not require voltage until you again turn off the engine. Tractors have a lever that you pull to stop the engine, you can turn the key off and walk away leaving the engine running.

Being held open all of the time with electric sounds dodgy,surely it would burn out in a very short space of time?

again, I am not questioning your knowledge, this is just the way I thought they worked.

you've lost me how did we get onto stop solenoids(which do need power to work its when power is cut off that they stop) but bear in mind that once working they dont req as much current to maintain the field
