It probably has nothing to with your car's problem, but I had the same problem with a Volvo 3litre V6 Auto a few years ago and it was a loose conector on the gear level inhibitor switch.

I suspect if your problem is so intermitant it is probably electrical, I suspect a sensor of some sort that would stop it stalling under load, such as crank speed sensor, but I am not familiar with the 405 auto.

Are there any engine management faults listed?

I would say sensors too. You need to get the faults read from the ECU and go from there. Three things spring to mind from my experiences with this car. MAP sensor, idle control valve and Lambda sensor, but it could be something else. The easiest thing to do first is the idle control valve. Take it off and give it a good clean in carb cleaner and make sure the valve rotates inside. Allow to dry before refitting and trying.

thanks for the response and I apologise for the delay in replying ( this having to work for a living is ruining my social life )

I have no warning lights on, where do I read these management faults or test the sensor ( is this something I can do or a garage job ? )
