Oli decided to add:

No, I don't know either and can't find it in the Haynes Book of Lies. Its just behind the grille at the front.
Oops... forgot to say this is on my 406 estate yr 2000 2.0 Hdi
Looks like a resistor....probably for your lights bright/dipped...
It is a cooling fan speed resistor.
I changed one on a xsara about 3 weeks ago.
That paticular vehicle was 2 years old with aircon.
There were 2 in the cooling fan panel ( as yours) & colour coded because of differant resistance ratings.
The problem with mine is that the fan did not work until near boil warning, checked both resistors using a multimeter & found one resistor dead.
I can't remember the exact price of the unit - I think around a tenner.
Hope this helps, regards.....
Many many thanks... just what i wanted to know
