Peugeot 205 de-mister

I have a Peugeot K reg. 205gr hatchback. I've had to buy one of these portable fan heaters to de-mist my windows, this was a complete waste of money. I've also had a mechanic try and fix it while doing some work on the car, but he said he couldn't get it to work (I don't know if he tried). The problem is, it has a mind of its own, it can work for days at a time and then for no reason just quits, usually when you need it most. When it does work you cant control the speed, or it stops working. Also I sometimes have problems when I drive in first gear, the car starts to jerk on and off and I have to push the clutch in and give it some acceleration to keep it from stalling, I don't know if this is relevant but thought I'd put it in, just-in-case? I have just had a set of new plugs put in and about to fit a new air filter hoping this might help.I cant remember if the leads were renewed when a new distributor was put in some time ago? I have the Peugeot manual but I'm no mechanic and find it no help whatsoever. Someone said I might find the answer in the archives, would someone please tell me how to look at them. I'm a pensioner and cant afford to put my car into a garage. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong? Thanks for any help.

Hi Scottie,

I expect your various problems are un related. A replacement set of plug leads are worth a try and if you shop around on line should not cost you too much.

The archives can be found via google. select google groups and then advanced search. Put in the news group name(alt.autos.peugeot) and then a few search words such as heater fan and perhaps 206.

Hope this helps,

Bob

ps

As a pensioner, had you thought of an evening class on basic car maintenance where you could learn some basics and even perhaps get the tutor to help you with some of the more obscure problems? I think the fees are much subsidised for pensioner and those on low incomes.

Also I think the heater blower problem could be caused by the rheostat, which is located in the passenger side part of the heater case, adjacent to the blower motor itself. Has a 4 or 5 pin plug and the unit is held in by a couple of screws.

Thanks Nigel, can I see the rheostat without having to strip down a lot of parts? By the way what is it and what does it do?

As a source for your plug leads, I can recommend

who are fast, cheap and offer excellent quality parts - I've used them for all sorts of stuff (including leads!)

Thanks Matt, I had a look at the site, it's very well set-up and I had no problem finding my way around it, I sometimes find looking for things on the internet quite daunting. At first glance I thought the leads were rather expensive, £17.63 including VAT, but that's because of my age, I still think in the old £SD money. Anyway, I phoned up a Peugeot dealer to compare prices and got a right shock to be told their ignition leads would cost £35.00 + VAT, quit a difference. Matt do you know what their delivery charge for small purchases is?

Just had a look at your two links Matt, and I am very impressed at your enthusiasm, well done. I have put the links into my favourites and will be keeping up to date with your work.

It is a very easy site to get around - miles better than

formatting link
which, although their site looks very flash, is a pain in the arse to use!!!

Yep! Peugeot do that! - I'm pretty sure the leads I got from parts4peugeot were Peugeot boxed leads (although I may be remembering incorrectly) - either way, they've been great so far (as was the dizzy cap, rotor arm etc I got at the same time)

I've just checked and come up with the following... Ignition Lead Set - Qty 1 - £15.00 Subtotal: £15.00 Shipping: (Standard Shipping) £8.94 VAT: £4.19 Total: £28.13

So it does add up a bit (although still 7 quid cheaper than Peugeot) although the text on their site states... "If your order is small in value and we feel that we can send it by a more cost effective way for you we will contact you and discuss the options available"

So it might be worth emailing them or drop them a line on 01895 907050

Cheers! Thanks for the encouragement.

A bloke I work with is always saying things like "What is it with you and that little car?" when I've just done some work on it. He can't see the attraction as he gets into his faceless Astra and tootles off home. I on the other hand, get in my (what is considered now to be) classic, drop the roof, and drive home with a big grin on my face.

No prizes for guessing which car gets the looks on the road!!! I'm treating it to a full valet tomorrow so it should look even better!!!

You may have to remove a small piece of insulation just under the motor, but that's it. Oh, and I hope you fairly supple, as it does involve getting your head down under the heater assembly. You'll need a light and a phillips screwdriver. Basically, it is what gives the variable speed to your blower motor in accordance to what setting you put on the dial. Usually when it goes wrong, you have either no fan, or full speed only.

As I said Nigel sometimes the fan blower works for days at a time, but like you said you can not vary the fans speed or it stops altogether. Nigel is the reostart a connector of some sort and just pulls out, which side is it on, and have you any idea how much it costs?

Just remove the electrical connector and the two screws and pull it out. It's on the passenger side to the right of the blower motor. I'm afraid I have no idea how much it costs. I did one about 5 years ago and it was I think £25ish. Just ring your local dealer and ask them. You may be able to pick one up at a scrapyard.

Thanks Nigel, Before I buy one at £25 probably nearer £40 after five years? Is there any way I can test the old one when it is disconnected first before I get a new one, as it might be something else that's the problem? I'm afraid money's a bit tight at the moment.

Dunno. I've never tested one, just renewed 'em! They're transistorised, so I would imagine you would need specialist equipment, and the figures to know what you are looking for. £25 was only a guess mind, from memory. Do you want me to find out for definite? Ican do that tomorrow and let you know tomorrow night.

Message to Scottie.

About the fan rheostat. I think I remember that your 205 is after

1988? Because there is an early version of that rheostat that is fitted in the engine compartment. That is no longer available. The one after 1988 costs £32.51 + VAT and the part number is 644590.

Just as a final check before you lash out on the part. Remove the plug from the heater blower motor in the passenger footwell. and make sure the plug isn't burnt. That could cause problems.
