Peugeot 206

I have bought a gear knob for my peugeot 206 (2002). i can get the old gear knob off, but when i come to fit my new one, the hole is too small. I have tried to get the plastic thing from the metal gear shaft rod, but it looks like its bonded. Any cheap ideas on how to get the plastic thing off it? cheers...

With my one I had to be brutal with it by just using a pair of pliers and taking chunks out of the plastic until I got it all off.
