What tyres for 405 TD estate?

I'm just about to put new tyres on the front of my 405 TD estate, takes

185/65 R14. Alloys, if it matters. What would you recommend?

We do a lot of city stop/start with quite a lot of acceleration/braking, mixed some long-haul high speed motorway stuff.

I care less about economy than safety and good grip especially in the wet.

Currently have Goodyear Eagle Touring, which ere recommended for the wet and seemed pretty good. But ... any thoughts? Michelin? Pirelli?

Also, what speed rating do I need? One can certainly push the limit sometimes on the motorways here.

Many thanks.

I recently got a set of four new continentals (made in Germany) on my 406

195/65/15. they where £160'ish including fitting (for 4) and are better in the wet than the Michelin Pilot premacy's I had on there before that cost £170 each.

good grip especially in the wet.

I was told by a mechanic thatPirelli being a softer compound give a better grip in the wet. However they do require replacing more frequently !

Indecently, my wife's car (vw) has Bridgestone Touranza tyres, they are pants in the wet....

Generally speaking the widest tyres offer the most grip with a loss in comfort levels.- lots of grip buts lots of bumps

195/60/14 is the widest you can fit on a 14" wheel. Go to your local library and look up "which" mag. They have a periodic tests of tyres and have a range of price levels.

Also you have to consider load levels on the front tyres of a diesel car. Tyres have this load level marked on the sidewall.

I fit 175/70/14 as I get a good choice of different makes. Generally go for the cheapest as well.

"T" rated tyres are good for 112mph. For insurance purposes never fit tyres that are rated for a speed less than the max speed of your car - even though you may never go at that speed.Don't know the max of a turbo - Peugeot manual should have the rating required.

When I had an E21 BMW I used Michelin MXVs which were great in the wet. When I could no longer afford them, then pushing £100 each, I changed to Continentals & only then realised how poor the MXVs had been in the dry.

On a Merc W123 I thought GoodYear NCT2s were fine, but for the Peugeot I was told they were not available in a suitable size.

Instead I have Firestone F-590s, which seem to be fairly common on 405s. So far so good, though I may not be pushing that that hard.

My estate is the non-turbo, so I am not sure on your speed rating.

Thanks to all. I'm off to get a pair of Continentals fitted, they being the most easily available of the tyres recommended. Cheers, A
