1995 Sunfire Stalling

Howdy! Got a 95 Sunfire, 73K, well kept, that stalls itermittently when stopping. Runs fine, accelerates fine, but about 10% of the time when it comes to a stop, engine stutters and stalls. Starts again immediately, idles in park with no problems, but stumbles and often stalls again when shifting into drive. Sometimes, however, it starts right back up again and runs fine. This all starts happening within a few minutes of driving.

Checked spark plugs and wires - worn, but not badly. Replaced them anyway. Doesn't seem to have made a difference. A little (mechanical) bird told me to have the Ignition Module checked... I figure I have to go down to the dealer and have the car scanned, but I never seem to get out of there cheaply. Especially around Christmas. Hmmmmm....

Anyway, I thought I'd "ask the experts" and see if anyone had any other ideas before I walked into the lion's den...

Thanks for any assist... -Chris Bond

I always start cheap... Try going for a new fuel filter. Have you recently ran your car to almost empty, could have some water in the system>??

Mike,

Yeah - I've been surfing for answers and the fuel pump has turned up a couple times. Don't believe it's ever been run low... aren't there additives I could use to get rid of any water? If so, I might spring for that on the off chance it works...

Thanks for the info! -Chris

Sounds like a lock up torque converter that's not unlocking 100% of the time.

You can try shifting into neutral just before stopping, but eventually the solenoid will stick "on" and the car will stall as soon as you put it in gear.

Does it seem to only happen if the car is warm? The torque converter can only lock up once the car has warmed up a bit.

If you're mechanically inclined, you can disconnect it to test the theory - a manual from the library might even cover it. Won't cause any damage to run with it unlocked - your fuel economy might go down by a mpg or two, but won't damage anything.
