Dealer Parts Prices

Had the water pump replaced this week at the dealer. I know, but no time to do it myself. Anyway, they charged me 190.51 for the pump and about $77 EACH for the belts! This is for a 98 GTP so yes, two belts.

Prices I have found from other dealer sites on the net tell me the pump is about 113 list and the belts each list about $48.

Can dealers set their parts prices that far above "list"? Do I have a beef to take up with the Service manager or should I let it go?

Thanks,

Did the prices you mention include the labor? Or was it just the parts cost?

When I bought a water pump for my 3800 last August at a Chevy dealer a friend works at it was $111.16 LIST price, my cost was $84.23 ( with friends discount ). I put the water pump on myself

The Serpentine Belt I bought ( same place & with the discount ) last April was $40.98 LIST price, my cost was $31.06

I don't know it there is any differance between a non SC 3800 water pump and yours, If yours is the same as mine and list was $111 for mine, and you paid $80 over list, then you did get ripped.

What was the labor cost ?

Ya figure eh? I've been working for over 23 years in GM dealerships. I'd say I have a pretty good idea of what the markup is from dealer cost to retail. 40% it aint, unless you are talking about big items like engines and transmissions.

I get cost + 10% pricing on all the parts that I personally buy. Again, this gives me a birds eye view of what the mark up is on GM parts at the dealership.

I bought a water pump for my 97 Bonneville a few years ago, I remember cost about $110 from dealership. I installed myself. I wouldn't be surprised if that water pump cost the dealership $30 max.

Dealers should `nt charge above suggested manufacture`s list price. I`m not sure of the price of the pump, but most serpentine belts are around $50.00 . I would aproach the Service Manager and have him explain the bill to you.

When I was in "the business" there was generally no more than 30% markup on parts from dealer to end user. Sparl plugs, fan belts, oil filters, etc were an exception. Might see 50% on those year round, and an extra 10% or so on "seasonals" ordered a quarter in advance - one time buy promotion type - like buy 100 winter wipers, or 250 spark plugs for the "winter tune-up" season.

Thanks to Harry and everyone who replid! I was out of town, or I would have chimed in sooner. Harry, your prices pretty much match exactly what I found online (surveyed 3 Pontiac dealers online parts departments through parts.com)

Pump 112.83 list/ 84.62 sell price belts 48.18 list/38.14 sell 47.70 list / 35.78 sell.

I think my first call will be to the parts department. "I need a water pump for a '98 GTP, what;s your price" Then to the Service Manager to see what he says. I'll report back if it's anything interesting.

Oh, and Harry, the labor was 298.50. They don't list how many hours the book says and I don't think I saw any sign stating what the hourly rate is. I would assume $75-80/hr.

Thanks again,

I'm not 'figuring' anything... I had 14 years in a Pontiac dealership myself, including 8 years in the parts department. Things may have changed since I left there in the early 90's, but for the 14 years before it hadn't. When I say 40%, I am not talking 'gross profit' - that is a diffetent calculation. I am saying that list price is usually about 40% higher than cost. Check this out with your parts people. Like I said, it may have changed.

usualy we pay more at the dealership, to get high quality parts your pump should have a warranty. its new not a re-built
