elec fuel pump

need some advice about fuel pumps. i've got a q-jet on a 455 and a carter mech fuel pump. after the car sits for 5 or 6 days the carb drains and i either have to crank for 30 secs or manually pour fuel thru the vent. this has gotten old. i want to install a small electric in series w/ the carter. it would be actuated by a toggle switch relay for priming the carb and wot throttle only. would it be advisable to mount a filter before the pump? i want to go to 3/8 from the 5/16 line. any advantages to aluminum vs braided hose other than looks and price? to go from the 5/16 stub in the sender unit in the tank to 3/8 what fitting would work best. i'd like to maintain the rubber fuel hose connection there cuz i think the factory used it to deaden/absorb vibration. since i'm only using this at start up and wot do i need the oil pr shutoff switch? will the carter be able to pull adequately thru the electric? lastly what would be a good pump candidate for this application? thanx, rick

Most likely the real problem is that the Q-Jet is leaking down. There are two welch plugs on the bottom of the fuel bowl that are known to leak. Through the years i have overhauled many Q-jets, and during the overhaul I always sealed the two plugs with J.B.Weld . They are located on the bottom of the fuel bowl between the base and the main body. Always install a new float ,as well.
