help: 96 grand am intermittant starting problem

1996 Pontiac Grand Am, 2.4L DOHC, automatic

Every other day or so, it won't start on the first try. If I keep trying it eventually will start and run fine. Could a clogged fuel filter cause this?

Could be a fuel filter. Could also be a bad fuel pump relay or a number of other things. Does it run fine after its started? If you never replaced your fuel filter it would be good to replace it either way.

Does it crank while trying or does it do nothing at all? IOW Are you sure it isn't your starter. Does it give an error code, and how does the air filter look?

To add to the responses, I think a little more information about the car would help us out. Another possible source if it is cranking each time is spark plugs. They are rated to 100K miles on that engine.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I just retrieved the car from my daughter.

It cranks good, but won't start, sometimes. But last night I started it first time, and drove from FT Worth to Plano, no problems at all. I have not pulled the plugs yet so they may be the originals. I don't have the cpu codes yet, but will have the scan tool to read them tomorrow or Friday.

I'm thinking dirty fuel filter, causing intermittent fuel pressure loss. I am going to change the filter later today. I at least will know for sure if the thing was partially clogged.

What do you guys think?

I just saw your reply. Yes, it runs fine after starting. A couple of times it stalled after starting. But, after is starts and runs it is perfect. I am going to replace the fuel filter tomorrow. Also, I will be doing a OBD scan and I hope that fuel pressure is one of the parameters that is measured by the OBD-II.

Last night I hooked up an OBD-II scanner and there were no codes stored in the OBD.

Does the 1996 Grand Am OBD-II provide the complete SAE-J2012 trouble codes plus the GM codes?

What I want to know is that if the fuel filer was partically clogged thereby reducing fuel volume to the fuel rail would the computer pick this up and record a trouble code?

When I pull the old fuel filter out today (or tomorrow, it is cold and rainy today) I will do the old school test of blowing air into to test it.
