How are series lll 3.8s different from series ll

Anybody know how the series lll engines in the



04 grand prixs are different from the series ll engines GM has put in Pontiacs since 1995. The hp and torque ratings are higher. Do they get this from bigger valves or just different electronics and fuel injection. Also, is GM eventually going to go with the Series lll to replace the ll in their other cars. Is the 3.8 still a cast iron block and head? Not too many all cast iron engines any more.

They need to make a cast aluminum Series 4, with the weight savings it would make any car its put into haul ass....

It is my understanding that the 3.8 is to be replaced worldwide by the ALLOYTEC V6 design engine. Basic info on the 3.6 is available here

Having driven both in Commodores and Monaros, I can tell you the 3.6 is a blast and a quantum leap over the 3.8 cast iron

The 3800 in all its variations will be gone by 2009. It will be replaced by the High Value 3.5 (200 hp) and 3.9 (240 hp), and the High Feature

3.6 (255-260 hp). The 3.5 and 3.6 are out now, the 3.9 will make its debut early next year in the G6 GTP.

For supercharged applications, the 295 HP LS4 V8 (as seen in the upcoming Grand Prix GTP) seems to be taking the 3800's place...

Great side! So who (GM or Holden) design 3.6 L engine and computer management system on G6 Pontiac?

The 3.6 is not in the G6 Pontiac. Presently the 3.5L is. There will be a

240 hp 3.9L w/cylinder deactivation, available in the first half of 2005 (calendar, not model year).

I believe GM NA designed the 3.6L as well as the ECM. Holden's big specialty seems to be the RWD platform (Zeta) which will provide the basis for many GMNA cars. Their styling director, Mike Simcoe, is also movin' on up in GM circles...

Are the 3.5 and 3.6 overhead cam engines or pushrod? Is this 3.5 the same as the 3.5 that was in some Oldsmobile cars? That was basically 3/4 of the Northstar V8. I thought that engine was unable to meet EPA pollution requirements.

3.5 = pushrod 3.6 = OHC

though the 3.5 is EXTREMELY smooth for a pushrod engine (99% of people couldn't tell the difference).

Nope, it is not the ShortStar. That engine was retired in 2002. The 3.5 is a heavily-reworked version of the old 3.1/3.4 V6's. Those engines are going away, as older cars using them are replaced/retired, and engine factories are converted over to build the 3.5 and 3.9.

It was expensive to build, wasn't a great performer, couldn't be easily scaled upwards in HP/torque, and would not meet future emissions requirements, so it was dropped (along with Oldsmobile). The 3.6 effectively is its replacement...
