power steering pump mystery(help!!!)

okay so what am i missing here in the problem with the pump?94' grand prix (3.4),loud whining with old pump, car steered okay like nothing wrong,,no leeks, fluid okay too,so i replaced the pump thinking the bearings were shot, the new pump does the same thing, just as loud and everything seems the same, the sound is diffently comming from the pump,so what things did i do wrong in changing it or routines that i should have done maybe?there is no bubbles in fluid to mean air or suction problems, fluid is relativly new,car steers from side to side with no trouble really.just a very loud whine when the wheels are turned in any manner, with wheels straight ahead, there is a little whine that fluxuates with engine speed.any ideas please??? is it possible the new pump is defective??return line maybe collapsed??internal rack problem??? bob

The whine is not caused by bearings. It's caused by the sound of the teeth of the gear pump coming together. If you get a good fluid level in it, and all the air works its way out, they'll usually quiet down. Give it a week and see if it improves.

If it doesn't, the rebuilt pump is probably more worn out than the one you took off. If it's really new it might be defective.
