I have a 96 pontiac grand am gt and when its goin about 30mph or so the speedometer starts jumping around and then just falls to zero and stays there till i slow down again. what could be the problem here? Could this cause the check engine light to be on also?

Possible bad sending unit. Yes.
It is. A bad speed sensor typically just doesn't work. A bad speedometer acts like the OP described. GW
1996? it must be so rusted now
