To Harry Face or Anyone Else - Battery

Sorry Harry Face. It's been a long, long time ago now (months ago), but a long time ago you asked me how many cold cranking amps my car battery had because I was talking about how my 1988 Pontiac 6000 (2.5L) would not start well during the cold temperatures. The battery has a March 2004 sticker on it, and it has 690 cold cranking amps. The regular cranking amps are in the

800's. Is that good or not? If that's good, then the next thing I will have to point at is my oil viscosity. I'm using 10W-40, which I would bet doesn't help any during the Winter time. The oil's getting pretty black, so it's time for a change, and do you think I should put 5W-30 in it? We've always used 10W-40 oil in it, and it has never done well starting in the cold temperatures, so I bet that's more of the problem than the battery. What do you think? Thanks.

T,

Does your car's owners manual offer a choice for a winter time oil? If so I'd use it. The recommended oil for my Bonneville is 10 W 30 all year round, but if the temperature is going to be below 50 degrees, then 5 W

30 can be used If you want to use 10 W 40 in the winter, thin it out with a quart of Mystery Marvel Oil.

An 800 CA / 690CCA Battery should be alright in the winter. It will probably pull down on those below zero mornings - but all cars batteries will at those temperatures.

Winter's on its way here in Chicago and the Bonneville will be getting more use now.

Good Luck

Why bother, when it's cold it is EXACTLY the same as 10W30

A 3.8 will start just fine with a 650cca, but I run an 800cca on mine. If the dome light stays on overnight it will STILL start!!!

Well on it's way up here in Oantariaiario as well.
