Can anybody advise on how to get this dang 50lb. sucker out of its compartment? Specifically, do I need to remove the blower housing sitting right in front of it to turn 1/64" clearance into a full inch?
I heard that Interstate makes a golf cart battery that's smaller, lighter and can be installed within the wheelbase if anyone is interested i'll track it down.

I can get the battery out of a '87 911 faily easily...I think an Optima battery might be the best one for the replacement. I don't have to remove the condenser blower.
That Mac truck battery balances the oil cooler. A lighter replacement is not a good idea if you ever corner at the limits.
Never heard of the "balance" issue. I, and many others are using the Optima. Guessing that it's about one third the weight of the OEM battery. You can buy, or make a hold down plate to secure the battery. Standard ground cable might be a little short, but it's an easy one to replace.
My cab is pretty much a summer only car, and std battery always seemed to be dead when the sun came out. Optima hasn't seen a charger since it was installed, and has never failed to start the car, ever!
Costco has the Optima (red top) for about $100. if memory serves me.
