What are the best mods that can basically be made to an early 944 in terms of power ? Thanks.

Not much...in 1983, when the 944 was introduced, the factory tweaked 150HP out of it. In today's standards 150HP is not much, but back in early 80's the Corvette was producing 188HP and the Camaro and Firebird were producing
You can put in a different chip and replace the exhaust system. This still won't get you far. The stock answer for this is "Sell it and get a turbo." The engine is highly tuned as it is.
