What makes these so darn fast?

Also, could someone give a quick rundown of engines vs. model and year for the 4 cylinder series?

The S2 (and S) had 16-valve cylinder heads, so they breathed better.

As the owner of one, I would be glad to share...

They increased the engine size to 3.0 liters and gave it a 16V head. The worlds largest and most powerful N/A 4 cylinder car in the world at the time. It had more power than most V-6's and was near most V-8's. What made them functional was the ability of Porsche to achieve a perfect power curve. While the new cars have outputs of upwards of 200HP, their lower torque outputs make them feel weak. You run out of acceleration way before you ever get to that 200HP. The S2 motor gave you punch throughout its useful torque curve and it allowed hard acceleration when most cars are petering out. The real beauty is in the higher MPH range. You can punch it at 80 or 90 and it will jump to 120 in a snap.

I guess "useable power" is a good definition.

Is the only difference between the 968 3.0L and 944 3.0L the addition of the Variocam? And why tease us with mention of the turbo? Aren't there only like 12 of them?

There were a few other minor details, but yes, they were virtually the same. The 968 was originally called the 944S3. There are some spy photos of the car and it was the 944 with the updated 968 rear. Quite nice.

There were 968 variants available in Europe. Some lightweight screamers and sport models. The pinnacle being the 968 Turbo S. Without it being available to America, the numbers were very small. Sixteen is the number you are searching for, but they were available. Just to tease you a bit more... The 968TS had a 0-62 of around 4.3 seconds.
