My ABS braking system seems to engage even on very mild breaking
Has anyone had experience of this?
Is the cure expensive? and again ?

It is almost definitely a cracked reluctor ring. This is the toothed ring that sits around the outer CV joint behind your front wheel hub, the ABS sensor picks up its signal from there so it can tell which wheel is moving. These are prone to cracking, unfortunately, you'll need to get a full new outer CV joint as they are not replaceable. You could try one from a breakers, but you can't be sure how long it'll last.
