Help: Coolant Leak

Hi all

I have a 1997 Rover 214i 16v and it is leaking coolant. I realise that it is very common for the cylinder head gasket to go on K-series engines but this leek seems to be coming from much lower down the engine. I can't inspect it very easily but the leak seems to be coming from the back of the engine (the bit next to the car rather than next to the headlamps) just above the sump. The water then runs around the ridge of the sump and drips off at the front. The head gasket (I presume) is much higher up the engine than this and so I was hoping it would be something less sinister.

The oil is perfect with no white gunge and the water is crystal (besides coolant) when it drips on to the road. The engine also runs fine. Also, the cylinder head went on another K-Series that I had, however the water leaked INTO the engine rather than out and onto the road.

Just to let you know the tempurature gauge doesn't work so the fan is constantly on but I would not have thought that that would cause a leak.

I would be very grateful if you could let me know what you think because I am baffled.

Thanks

David

Inlet manifold gasket ?

Sounds like there may be some core plugs down there. If so, they do tend to go leaky with age.

It's entirely possible it could be a leaking core plug, thermostat housing or even water pump. Most of the plumbing on this engine is around the back so there's plenty of places it could be leaking from.

HG usually fail internally so it's not likely to be this but...

..sort out the gauge ASAP - the fan should not run constantly even with a knackered gauge or sender as it uses it's own thermoswitch. As you've already got a water leak and these engine don't hold much yet rely heavily on the cooling system you should be very wary about running it, especially if the fan is permanently on!

Sounds like it could be the inlet manifold gasket. Same thing happend on my '94 214SEi. Cost £60 all in for it to be done.

Problem is, within a few months, the water pump and head gasket went too!

Getting rid of the car shortly for a brand new Rover 45.....with a K-series engine!
