Rover Coupe VVC - Noisy Engine

I need some advice on what could be the causing my VVC to sound like a Diesel!

I've just purchased the Vehicle form a trader and have only done a few hundered miles in it before it started to sound bad. I've phoned the trader back and complained but i wanted to get some other opinions on what could be the cause.

The oil has been changed recently for fully synthetic oil and the levels are fine. It has also had the Head Gasket replaced recently along with both the Cam Belts. Could it be that the Cambelts haven't been fitted properly? I have heard that this can cause the engine to misfire, i'm not sure if the sound it's making is a misfire but it certainly doesn't sound too healthy. Advice would be much appreciated.

Sounds like a blow in the exhaust somewhere if its that noisy. Check the back box first, where the engine side pipe enters the silencer as spray from the road wheels collects here and usually rots the weld between the pipe and the box.

The other place to check would be the down pipes. The welds where the pipe goes from two to one underneath the car can corrode and fail. They sound a bit sporty first but soon degenerate to rough!

Yeah, had this as well. Two Rovers back. The only thing holding it together was the manifold bolts one end and an exhaust bracket the other, As the last bolt was removed the downpipe fell into the pit, seperating perfectly into its component parts.

New exhaust and the performance is a lot better as the back pressure is more what the ECU and engine expects.

Only a brave man buys a K-Series that's just "had the Head Gasket replaced recently" !

What was the final bill ? Did they do a full job, and check and skim the head etc. ?
