Check Engine Light

I hope someone can advise me on what is causing the check engine light to come on!! It comes on intermitently and sometimes lasts only a few minutes, other times it lasts for days. The model is 1996 900 2.0 litre automatic.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I should have mentioned that there seems to be no adverse effects in the cars performance except that the mpg seems low at 23mpg around town, is this average for a car of this age? Thanks again

Check those different small, mostly vacuum, hoses on the engine. One of mine were loose and after changing the hose I have had no problems with the Check Engine.

Tighten the gas cap. See if it goes away in a couple days. If the car starts to miss and run very rough, it is probably the DI cassette. If you are in the USA, you can go to and Autozone store and they will read the code out of the computer. That's the best way to find out without guessing.

I have a 1992 Sabb 900 S. bought it new. My check engine light comes on and off at diffent times ever since mile one. I now have 120 k and it still comes on and goes off when it pleases. The dealer says nothing wrong and the car runs better than ever. It has never stopped or even stalled once. maybe thats the reason they call saab quirkey.

good luck papa gene

When the CEL comes on there should be codes stored in the ECU which can be pulled and will likely help determine what the ECU thinks is wrong. It may or may not actually be wrong, it's just that is what the ECU thinks. Knowing this you should be able to fix the problem or the faulty sensor so that when the CEL light comes on again sometime in the future you will know it is for real and not a false alarm. You know, like the boy who called "wolf"...

That is how inconsistent Saabs are. They indicate there is something wrong, but no no no, they don't stall nor stop. They just keep on going :)
