I've recently acquired a late-1982 Saab 900-S and despite a few hickups caused by the starter motor shorting out it's armature causing a small fire in the wiring to the starter relay, etc. (including collapsing a cell in the battery), the car runs fine.
I'm going a lot of cosmetic stuff like replacing broken headlight and taillight assemblies, cleaning up some of the messy non-factory wiring, etc. but one thing I'm very keen on is replacing the 3-speed auto transmission with a 5-speed manual transmission.
I have seen websites about doing this, but was wondering if any of you have actually done it?
I currently have an early 1983 Saab 900 GLi coming down from another state. The car has no rego and the engine isn't in superb condition but I view it as a source of parts since Saab parts here in Australia are astronomically expensive.
The car has a 5-speed manual tranmission and if it's ok, I'd be looking at maybe doing a transmission swap-over on the running vehicle.
If you've done the changeover yourself, was there anything in particular you found which went wrong, or you had to be careful of, which isn't readily noted in existing documentation in the various books on the early 900's such as the Bentley manual, etc.?
