Classic 900 Saab - stopped clock and mobile phone handsfree installation query...

It looks as if I'm going to have to remove the lower dash of my '85 Saab 900 again to replace the turbo pressure sensor. It seems like a good time to finally get round to installing a handsfree system for my mobile (probably the Ericsson HBH-10), and try to find out why the dash clock has been stuck at 4:10 for the past few years.

So, does anyone have any tips/pointers for neat installation of a handsfree system on a classic 900, and guesses as to what's stopped my clock, and how to fix it. It's a UK car, by the way, so I'm moderately used to converting LHD advice to RHD as necessary...

Oh, and as a very minor point, the cruise control has never worked since I've had the car, but fixing it wouldn't hurt. Are there any useful diagnostic tests to find out what's wrong?

Thanks all,

James

P.S. The tyres are fine, but it's probably just a matter of time...

Make sure all hoses having to do with Cruise Control are connected, not cracked at the ends and make sure the speed sensor is connected to the back of the speedo (access through speaker in dash). See the Bentley manual.

In my late-1982 900, the odometer doesn't work. The speedo does, so the problem is clearly with the internal gearing, etc. which drives the counter.

I've never pulled the instruments out before, though when I get the early-1983 900 GLi I just mentioned in another posting, I will use it as a test-bed so I don't destroy the rest of the intrument cluster which works fine.

My mechanic who does a lot of work on Saabs says that getting the instrument cluster out is a very difficult job. Early visual investigation shows that a lot of work is needed to get enough of the dash structure out to enable the instrument cluster to be removed, but I'm open to advice about this.

The clock is mechanical isn't it? So it's probably like the problem with the odomoter in my classic 900 - ie. the gearing internal to the instruments.

My car doesn't have a turbo (but in Australia it's hardly ever going to be an advantage) or cruise control (which would be useful). I guess not having those features is good since there's a lot less to go wrong. 8-)

Turbo-equipped 900's appear to be very rare here. Maybe Saab never really viewed Australia as a 'hot' market for turbo-charged cars in the 1980's...

Craig.

Probably your elevation is too low. Colorado is the perfect place for turbos, we do most of our driving between 5,500 and 11,000 feet (1700 and

3400 m)!

Thanks! Will do - I took a look at them the last time I was under the dash, but I didn't pressure test them. A lot easier now I've picked up a Mityvac...

I was told it was electrical - that whole dash panel connects up via a row of pins, and it stopped after the dash had been taken out for some work. But as you say, it seems like a fairly long process, and removing the steering wheel gets me a little edgy.

I've bought myself a copy of the Bentley manual for the 16-valve engined Saab's which is useful for my car even though it's an earlier 8-valve engined model.

I can't find anywhere which has the Bentley manual for the 8-valve engined Saab's available as a *new* item. I prefer to buy soft-covered books new.

Something I have scored are genuine metal-binder encased workshop manuals for the 1979-1983 Saab 900's... They'll be invaluable reference material.
