driving lights (high beams) won't stay on

1997 900SE This happened tonight. Flicked my high-beams (driving lights) on and they flicked right off. In other words, the stalk that controls it won't stay in the "on" position. The high beams do come on and stay on if I hold it. Does the stalk need to be replaced? If so, what am I looking for in terms of part and how difficult a job is it?

You mean it works the same way as during daylight hours - i.e. it's a high beam flash ?

On 9000s there's a control box in the relay compartment under the hood that contains some electronics ( logic chips and stuff ) that sorts this out. It's red coloured - at least I think that's the one. It's noted for developing problems. Usually it's just 'cold solder joints' - actually it's vibration that causes them to go 'open circuit' - from the printed ciruit board to the push in tabs and is easily fixed by anyone competent with a soldering iron and some common sense.

If it's the same for 900s I'd simply get a spare from a scrapped car and try a swap.

It's highly unlikely it's the stalk itself.

Is the headlight switch in the on position? If the switch is in the off position neither the high beams or fog light will work, however the low beam will still be on because of Daytime Running lights.

Laura,

This is exactly how they behave when the headlight switch is in the off position and you have DRLs. Are you sure that you had the headlights on?

That was the problem. I don't know why repair shops always insist on fooling with the switch. I usually leave it on so the headlights are on whenever the ignition is on. It was the first time I driven it at night since having new tires put on.

You're not the first person to fall victim to headlight switch / high beam trick-- it took me an embarassingly long time to figure that out in our 9-3.

Glad to hear there was no electrical problem. The really bad thing about what happened is you were driving around without any tail lights and did not know it.

Presumably, the dash would also have been un-illuminated.

It was at sunset and I was driving in a well-lit area for about 3 miles. Wanted the high beams on for a steep, twisty part, mainly to check for skunks on the road. There have been quite a few hit there lately since there are woods on both sides. First time I'd had it out after dark since the garages got their hands on it.
