oil drain plugs on C900's with auto transmissions

I've just checked under my donor car's manual transmission and the two drain plugs are clearly marked as 'gearbox' and 'engine'. On my 1985 900i with auto transmission there look to be two drain plugs where on the manual transmission there is one, and both aren't labelled.

I presume one drains the engine oil and one drains the transmission fluid. Any pointers on which one is which? It doesn't really matter since I have plenty of new auto transmission fluid spare, but I'd like to know for future reference. Is there a diagram or online reference with pics of the underside of the borg-warner type 37 auto transmissions to show which drain plug is which?

Also, I'm keen to replace the auto transmission filter and I think that the skid plate needs to come off to access the ATF cover. Is that correct?

Regards,

Craig.

The drain plug that you use a screw driver to loosen is the trans plug. The 13m plug is the oil. Good luck papa

Agreed - the screwhead one is always the autotrans. If you score a really old box where nobody has been hamfisted enough to strip the oil plug, it's a 19mm and your wheelbrace will get it out, otherwise 13mm. Hope you're actually getting to drive the thing occasionally. Meanshile, Marvin the (paranoid android) turbo desperately needs neew injectors but otherwise is still ridiculously fit. See you round sometime! Cheers

8-) I picked my 900S up from Saab Serve yesterday after it's A$1500 service (some expensive things needed fixing, such as the ignition lock barrel which was an A$250 part), and got a couple of new drain plugs with washers from Steve while I was there.

One's been installed into the drain plug hole in the auto trans of my 900i this afternoon along with installing a new oil filter (genuine Saab filter!) before popping in 4 litres of Shell Helix Ultra. I finally had a chance to test out my new (had it for about a year though) 1/2" drive torque wrench!

The torque setting should be around 25 foot-pounds according to the Bentley manual.

Craig.
