Oil Filter

I have a 2001 9-5 4cyl. What oil filters are recommended?

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic (or the Castrol equivalent). The local dealer sells a "SAAB" oil filter in a light sky blue cannister for almost $8. The local auto parts store is able to identify over 6 different oil filters that will fit from various manufacturers from prices that range from $3 to $7 (Bosch). Is the cheapest the best?

I haven't used Saab filters as they weren't available locally. But, if you can get them, use them. They are the best.

The cheapest is .... the cheapest - unless it causes a failure and then it's quite likely the most expensive! Saab OE isn't the cheapest but at least you have a guarantee that it's specified for your car. Cheers

Unless things have changed, Saab filters are Mann filters. You can buy either for a good price from

That said, I've read the oil filter studies in detail and there are others that are good too.

Correction: They used to be the best. ;o)

Saab "original" filters used to be MANN-filters. Today it's a smaller filter from AC Delco (GM), also used by Vauxhall and Opel.

Ah right, so if you can find MANN filters, use them over Saab then.

Are you sure that applies to the older spin-on filters, rather than just the newer ones used on the Opel-based 9-3 SS?

The Mann filters for the Volvo B21 engines also fit the C900 engines. This is handy because I buy them by the case - for my 245 with the B21FT and my Saabs.

Yep, Mann W917, fits all B21, B23 and B230 series Volvo engines as well as Saab 900s. I too buy them by the case, and these days it just about takes a case to do oil changes on all the cars in my immediate family.

And then it'll also fit at 99, 9000, NG900, OG9-3 and 9-5.

Useful to know that. I planning on coming back after Toyotas proved so stupidly expensive to run and maintain compared to my old T16S that I foolishly sold.
