repairing defective odometer section of speedo in C900

Feb 21, 2004 2 Replies

Hi everyone,

The speedo in my C900 has an internal 'issue'. If the car comes to a stand with the 1/10th km wheel in the odometer section sitting on zero, about half of the time the odometer will not continue counting the distance travelled and the reading remains stationery until there is enough vibration built up from the engine revs and from the changes in road surface to make the counter gearing pick up again. I've had one instance where I drove the car over 500 km's and the odometer recorded none of it!

The speedo section of the speedo assembly works fine - it's just the odometer. I'm assuming that one of the plastic gears inside the assembly has a tooth broken off, or that there is an engaging cog that has broken off where it's meant to drive the 1/10th km wheel in the odometer.

Is it worth repairing?

As you know, it's illegal to just drop in a new speedo which has a different odometer reading, so can a replacement speedo assembly have the odometer count pre-set before installation in the instrument cluster? That would make it easier than pulling apart a speedo assembly to find the broken gear and replace it.

How can the pre-setting be carried out?

Ideas?

Regards,

Craig.

There is one particular nylon cog which always breaks. Don't bother trying to glue it, either get a replacement cog, or a replacement odo.

Not in the UK it isn't.

Yes it can.

With a long needle and some pliers.

I don't think it's illegal anywhere, you just have to state on the title that the milage displayed isn't correct.
