Replace Clutch with slave?

Saab 9000s 1992 Sedan/Saloon

I am using a so called "Saab specialist" for the first time.

He comes well recommended but I have no experience with him.He tells me that since the clutch slave cylinder has failed and since there is hydraulic fluid in the housing that the clutch plate is probably "soaked" and should be replaced and also that the pressure plate should be replaced too because of the labor involved.

He is taking "clutch kit".

With the disc and plate $US900, without disc and plate $US700.

Could those who would understand this repair please post their opinions/recommendations?

Agreed; fluid is bad for the friction disk, and it'll be in his hand anyway. Parts are cheaper than labor.

Appropriate. It's got the slave, the pressure plate, and the friction disk, and costs about as much as any two of those 3 parts. Saves you a bit that way.

That seems high, but I never had/did a 9000, just a 900. Very similar parts though, I thought. I don't recall it being that high.

Sounds like much of that total is labor. So, if that's the case, the 200 bucks for the extra parts that you probably are close to needing anyway, is probably well spent. Otherwise, you're doing 1/3 of the job, for 7/9ths of the cost.

Thanks to all who posted so promptly.

There seems to be a consensus that while you have the clutch out that you should replace everything that is or could be worn.

I should have mentioned that the prices included labour and his "shop rate" is $US55 per hour.

If anyone else has anything to add that could be of value or that might be helpful, please post ASAP. I still have about a day or two before he is into the clutch.

I am very grateful that so much expertise is expressed so quickly.

Thanks vey much,

Malcolm

If he's charging $55 ph then the repair way too expensive. Book time for clutch is about 5 hrs. I've seen it done by 2 techs in 3 hours. Join the dots...
