Kinda hard to guess what is happening, without actually checking physically. Just a guess, do you see the clutch engaging and disengaging, resulting in ticking/clicking noises?
If you think you have an actual AC problem, then I would have the car looked at by a compitent mechanic. In my expericences with an older car, I took the time to get epa certified, since as you might have guessed, AC work can be expensive.
