How to adjust idle on 96 SW1 auto trans?

Hi all,

The idle speed on this car seems a bit low. When stopped at a light, in drive, the idle is about 600-650 according to the tach. It sounds like it is on the verge of stalling. I'd like to raise the idle just a bit, say to

800. Is this easy to do myself? I am handy with tools, but don't want to turn the wrong screw...

TIA, Chuck Connell

Idle is controlled by an idle air control solenoid (at least it is on a DOHC, not 100% sure about your SOHC), which in turn is controlled by the PCM. It is possible that your solenoid may be going bad. Reading the codes from the computer might help determine if that is the case, and people here have said that Autozone will do it for no charge.

The IAC valve and passage in the throttle body might just be carboned up and in need of a good cleaning.

Clean the throttle body and choke plate with a can of good aerosol throttle body cleaner.
