Ventshade tape removal mess

I am removing the Ventshade wind deflectors that the orig. owner of my "new" '02 SC2 had put on . I removed the shade part and now am encountering messy messy 3M tape which is on the rubber upper molding of my windows where they were mounted.

What a mess. What is the best way to safely remove the tape and goo without harming the rubber? (I already tried 3M adhesive remover, made more of a mess and seems to be harming the rubber molding). grrrr.

Try lighter fluid.

You need to find the right solvent. Others have made some good suggestions. Other things you can also try using are citrus-based engine degreaser/cleaner, WD-40, mineral spirits, turpentine, alcohol, and acetone. Be careful with some as they can absolutely destroy certain plastics.

Typically in the past, I've had success with wd-40 and a roll of paper towels.

Thanx all, great suggestions and I used most of them all. Here's what eventually worked:

Soaked a rag in Air Intake cleaner, wiped and let soak. This loosened the lower layer of adhesive and helped in breaking up the upper foam mess. Then wiped with lot of Simple Green and let soak. I was able to get most of it with a plastic paint scraper, the bad parts I had to get with a thin metal butter knife which had a smooth edge. I finished off the last of the adhesive with WD40 and let soak in, then wiped more in and let it permeate the rubber to put back some of the oils that all this may have removed. Washed the car and then applied Mothers Back to Black on the rubber. Not the most smooth surface, but good enough that I can put a new Ventshade back on.

If lighter fluid dosen't work try lacquer thinner.
