56J Carburetor hiccup

Can anyone tell me what might cause the 4-barrel carburetor to spill gas all over the place? I haven't run the car for 2 years. After replacing the battery and priming the carb with some gas, it finally caught, started and roared, and fuel spilled out of the carb in great quantities.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Float stuck in the down position, or debris preventing the float needle from seating, or float valve assembly worked loose in housing, and fuel flowing AROUND it.

Thank you, Gordon. Will look into it first chance.

Next time that you attempt to start the car, (I'm assuming that it's a WCFB), give the carb a good smack with the handle of a large screw driver. This often will reseat the needle valve or free a float.

If that works, Toss (the contents of) a bottle of Techron into the gas tank. This stuff has worked wonders with carbureted cars.
