In 1971, between Christmas and News Years, we were traveling in our
110,000-mile '64 Wagonaire from Western Kansas to Boston . A little east of St. Louis the alternator quit. I drove on until dusk on the battery then stopped in Pocahontas, IL and checked in to a motel. In the morning I went to the nearest shop to get the battery charged then drove on to South Bend. I went to Spicer-Freeman to get it fixed, but they didn't have an alternator in stock and they sent to Plant 8 (the original SASCO). I bought the alternator there and brought it back to Freeman-Spicer where they installed it. Here is what it cost:

Johnson BTW- the shop where I stopped had a Studebaker Transtar tractor (with 5th wheel) with a wrecker body installed. The owner told me that a trucker coming through had fuel system trouble- was so mad at the truck that he sold it to the shop cheap. They just installed a saddle tank, cut off the original tank and it ran fine.
