(From e-mail)

I scraped and wire-brushed most of the rust and old undercoating off the finished battery box, and gave it a coat of POR-15 inside and out. It may not be a thing of beauty, but it's vastly better than what I started with, and I know I won't be dropping the battery out on the road anytime soon, now.

I think I will simply replace both battery cables with brand new ones, and also incorporate a small terminal board into the battery box to serve as a tie point for all the smaller-gauge wires that were connected to the battery via ring terminals that were clamped under the heads of nuts on two of the unused battery terminals. The cables were originally set up for 3 Group 24 batteries in parallel. It now has one 3D-7 Cat battery, so 4 of the six original battery terminals are surplus. Being as the small wires were connected to terminal that weren't on battery posts, the nuts didn't really have anything to tighten against, so the ring terminals under them were not securely held. Not the way it oughta be.

The new battery cables shouldn't be too hard to get, or make. Three or four feet each should do it.

Sounds like I'm going to have to go to work tomorrow, so the wiring job will have to wait until I'm home.
