OT- photo resolution help

Hey guys, I'm trying to post pics to a Craig's List ad, but am having no luck because my files are too large. My camera gives 640X480, 320X240 and

160X120 as my choices of resolution. The highest resolution isn't working. Should I go to 160X120, or would the medium setting work OK? I'm getting tired of trying this over and over, and am too dumb to know if the lowest setting would sacrifice quality enough to adversely affect the appearance of my ad.

Thanks in advance-

Dave

Dave, I don't know what CraigsList sets as their file size limit, but you are always better off to take the picture in maximum resolution, and then resize it in your computer. If you have Windows XP, I think you can right-click on the picture an select resize from the context menu.

Or download Irfanview from the Internet (google it) for free, and use that nifty little photo editor to do the resizing.

Dave it isn't resolution, it is the size. What is the maximum size that Craigslist will accept? There are two ways around this. One is to resample (downsize) the image to 2 inces or less at a dpi of 300. The other method is to keep the image at 72dpi and then reduce it in physical size. Reducing the physical size while maintaining the 72dpi will actually, as you go down, increase the dpi. So, you can then change the dpi down to 150 or 200. Once you do that, save or export it as either a .gif, or a .jpg. A .jpg is a lossy file, that means image degradation, while a .gif is lossless, but needs to meet a color spec.

What you can do is download the trial issue of Thumbs Plus, or as mentioned Irfanview. Those programs will compress your file to meet the criteria of Graiglist.

Make sure that the resolution is no more than 72 dpi (pixles) since that's all any display can use and use the JPEG format. This will significantly reduce the "file" size while having no effect on the picture size.

Anything under a file size of 150k should probably work for Carigslist.

It may be the accumulated size of the photos you are trying to upload, rather than the individual size. I always take photos in JPEG mode at the max resolution of my camera, which is only

2 megapixels, then I reduce them using a freebie program "pixresizer" (under WinXP), you can download it here:
formatting link
To determine the file size:

1) just place your cursor over the photo's file icon and a small window should appear showing the size or

2) load the photo into Pixresizer and the image size is shown on the left side of the Pixresizer window or 3) right-click on it and choose "properties" off the menu that appears... then you'll be shown a window that includes the file size

If need be, use Pixresizer to resize the photo... choose around 320x240 as the output image size and use JPEG as the output file type to minimize the file size, then check to see if the saved file exceeds 150k. If it does, try again at lower sizes until the output file is 150k or less.

If your camera has a high resolution like 6 megapixels or more, you may have to resize the photos down considerably to get to

150k.... but Craigslist is not a photograph art gallery, so the reduced resolution should not be an issue.
