OT: USS Oriskany now artifical reef
Hazard to mariners at 80 feet.
Hazard to some kinds of fishermen at 200, but they usually read the charts.

Sniff, sob.... I was on Oriskany briefly in '66, a year before McCain was assigned to it. Seemed like an old ship even back then, without the creature comforts that came with more contemporary carriers.... it had to be easily 110 to 115 degrees in my quarters, so I went to bed dripping wet, trying to sleep over the constant clatter of a chainfall hauling supplies up and down from an adjacent lower deck storeroom all night, and with aircraft slamming onto the deck above me. Heaven was an electric fan, but I didn't have one. It was still better than a foxhole, though, because I had hot meals and a daily shower. R.I.P.
I would be easy for divers to find, that's for sure. If it had been scuttled in 80 feet of water the bridge would be sticking out of the water LOL

Wow! At over $5.00 a hundred weight, that is quite a waste of scrap iron! I am glad it wasn't sold to the Chinese, though!

When I worked on Kwajalein in the late 1960's to mid 1970's, a sizable number of Japanese ships were sunk in the lagoon. The best examples (upright wrecks) were sunk at a depth of about 100 ft to the main deck. At that depth, you have 25 minutes bottom time without the need for decompression.
I still have a couple of portholes retrieved back then...

I believe as I type this that the ocean liner France is on the way to the breakers...
