Reading the news group

Skipped overthing that was marked OT. Took me about 30 seconds to read all the Stude related stuff. :-( Looks like the Studebaker Newsgroup is just about run it's course. RIP Stude NG. :-(

Jerry, this place has been on life support for over a year. Where the newsgroup used to get 4000-5000 messages per month, it hasn't passed 2000 more than once in about a year and a half and only gone over 1000 once in the past six month. Usenet is virtually dead as a messaging system, it's run it's course... it's easier to setup and run an online forum. Several IP don't even want to deal with providing usenet newsgroup access or support.

Yes, it appears to be dying, shame really but so goes progress. It was a good source of information for a long time. Lamar

The car info is on the Club Site, but it is a drivers c;ub and here is where we can get to kbnow one-another better and see some humor. As it is so often written here, if it says OT and you don't like the subject, enter. Ten problem comes when someone turns a thread away from the subject or gets personal, indicating dislike for the writer instead of the stand the writer takes. Other was are possible: Barry and I often disagree, but still like each other and never talk nasty. Separate the person from the stand and liofe will be easier!

Yes, the NG is not as active, but I would be perfectly happy with it, if all the cross-posted OT stuff (especially M15) would disappear so that the content would be 100% Stude, or OT's posted by Stude folk.

If you use a newsreader like Outlook Express, blocking users is easy... I've got a handful blocked and now as far as I know their old man pulled out and shot them on the curtains.

Ditto here, but spammers have just about ruined all of the non-moderated groups. The spammers change their user names every day, so it is a constant job blocking them..

BTW, thanks for setting a good example, Karl.

I cannot tell you how many times the people on this newsgroup have been helpful. If not for parts but for advice and support! Even hints, ideas and nudges toward the right direction in solving problems. This is, I thought, the reason for a newsgroup for Studebakers. I also think that we do a pretty good job of policing ourselves. I never comment unless I think through the issue and have never gotten into any online confrontations. I consider all to be fellow Studie brothers and sisters. And, may I even go so far as to say: Friends?! I just ignore the posts that don't interest me or apply to my area of expertise, and the ones that I do read are very, very, as said before, Informative!!! Thanks, all. Flathead of the 57 Champion. Oh, and in the spirit of the season: Happy Holidays to everyone!!!

Boy that sad. In 1994 I signed up for Prodigy. They were the first online service to provide access to the internet. I remember scrolling the list of news groups looking for something interesting ( the internet was so new that many of the posts were " Is this the Internet?' ) and ran across this group. Never have owned a Sude but after reading the posts here over the years it became my favorite American car. I wouldn't mind having either a 62 Avanti or a 59 Lark. Anyway for years I have made it a point to stop in and see what the Studebaker People were talking about and visiting the web sites and pictures of which they spoke, I will continue to lurk, but wanted to thank you for many years of nice reading. Oh, I'm not going away. I was just lamenting the fact that I believe this NG is slowly going down the tubes. As long as there is a Stude NG I'll be here. I'll be here until they pry my wireless mouse out of my cold dead fingers

I too will not be leaving soon ( I hope). Don't post much but I do enjoy the group, even with my non stude studebaker (G). Lamar

In the days where Prodigy had an old car bulletin board me and a few others started talking about Studebakers, within a year or less alt.autos.studebaker started. I like this format better than the SDC forum since they took down the gizmo that e-mailed you that some one repsonded to a post.

The nG is much more informal and you can BS, and yes change topics. I heard this group was dying because of spammers, but I have not come across any.
