Silvertone mufflers

Finishing up an engine job this week and installed a set of Silvertone exhaust with the "medium" tone mufflers that the customer specified...although I told him to get the "quiet" ones. If these are the "medium" ones then I recon the "loud" ones are REALLY loud as these things have a real FRRRRRAAAPPP to them. I don't think the customer will like them...and quite frankly I don't either. I am way too old for that kind of noise (sigh).... Anyone out there used the "quiet" ones? I have generic mufflers on my Hawk and it sounds just right... Studebaker George

I too have passed the point of enduring noise.

That includes bad music, loud cars (and trucks), and bad behavior.

I'll be that the Silvertone system went together without a lot of fuss though...

I guess I'm not old enough yet, I love the FRRRRRAAAPPP ( A Avanti without glass packs is just a Lark in a party dress. )

Much as I completely hate doing exhaust work, I must admit that it does fit rather well. I didn't cuss TOO much but it did need the typical banging, shaking, and twisting. Still can't imagine doing one without a lift, though. This car is a convertible and the frame made it a little more of a pain, but all in all a great fit. I don't look forward to taking it apart again, but oh well...charge mo' money.. Studebaker George

I'm right there with you. To make matters worse, I just went and test drove a cheap Porsche 914 off Craigslist. I know some of y'all won't agree, but to me the sound of a vee-dub flatmotor through a loud exhaust is right up there with a Stude V-8. The car turned out to be a little too rough for me to buy, but just barely. If I had a little more $$$ in the bank, it would have come home with me. (I was actually checking it out for a friend, but it's way too rough for her.)

I smell like old car right now. I can sniff my fingers and smell that unburned hydrocarbon smell. I really, REALLY am going through old car withdrawal. And to answer the next question, yes, I'm stuck at home all weekend because I've advertised some topsoil on craigslist and the response has actually been quite good. I was originally going to wait until I got a truck but apparently that's not necessary. (my coworker still hasn't gotten his replacement vehicle yet, and I haven't found anything better than his old truck...) Maybe I can actually get the last of my driveway cleared off... that would be cool.

JP, ya get that driveshaft yet? let me know how it is, I'm just waiting for your report and the guy to get back to me re: the slip yoke.

Geez....I thought all the 914's had burned up years ago... Nate, you must not like that person very much to even suggest buying one of those firetrap rotbuckets. I can't remember how many of those I worked on years ago... Engine jobs out the wazoo...those cases were cramped and when a valve got sucked it would blow holes in the cases. Lesse; miles of injection hose, clutches that sucked, ROTTEN frame areas from the battery, cables that were way too long and would break, mickey mouse linkages, etc... The two liters were a ball to drive when they were right, though, and if you got lucky enough (or had enough $$$) to find a 6, then it was like driving a fast and more refined Europa. Push the loud pedal to the floor, leave it there, shift gears (trannys were indestructable) and turn the steering wheel when you needed to. Yeeha! Studebaker George (and don't bother with a fire extinguisher..I use to tell customers that..."let it burn")

See, the funny thing is... I have a mechanically good identical car in my parents' barn. I think she was counting on me being able to supply replacement parts :) (I do have a literal truckload.)

The risk of fire can be substantially reduced by replacing the plastic fuel lines with stainless, and replacing all the rubber FI hose with new. As for the engines sucking valves... yeah, you gotta keep the cooling tin in good shape, and adjust those suckers at every oil change otherwise the horrible death you describe will happen.

This particular car had a spectacular body for an unrestored car, if I only had a couple thou to blow this week, it would be mine. I wouldn't have gone to look at it at all, but it was *her* idea - I think she's a bit taken with my 944 and has been searching for a cheap Porsche of her own.

The drive shaft is beautiful, just need help to get the AT back in and hook it up. I'm dead in the water until you get back to Studebakers and away from Harry Homeowner.

Yeah, the valve adjustment/oil change was something you wanted to keep up with and try REAL hard to get the same tech to do it every time it was needed. A good tech could "catch" a stretching valve and you could avoid the meltdown. HOWEVER, many wouldn't listen to the tech and the engine would explode anyway...nya nya, told ya so.... At one time I had five of those things in the yard with holed engines and broke owners. I didn't even want them for parts! Studebaker George

Perfect, dump your 944 on her with no warranty.

To get back to Studes for a minute, I have the Silvertone medium tone mufflers on my 62 Hawk. I don't have what I'd call a "fraaaaapppp" but rather a definite bass note at 45-50 mph, not unlike the sound of a 5 liter Mustang.

I thought the "loud tone" were a little tame on my 56J - it pretty much sounded like an old Chris-Craft, which isn't an entirely bad thing, but not very aggressive. On my '55 with the larger tailpipes they sound wonderful, possibly a little loud for a daily driver. I think the tailpipe size has a lot of influence on the eventual sound.

O.K, who has a set of the "loud" ones? Do they sound like the stupid "flowmasters" that I just poopcanned from this car? Around here every sixteen year old redneck with a pick up truck is using those things. Studebaker George

The first thing I put on my old Avanti was a set of quiet tone mufflers.

Too much noise but no action (R-1) could lead to severe embarassment...

Same here with a '66 Avanti. The glass packs were so loud on it your ears would ring in a few miles of driving. In those days a '55 Commander muffler was a perfect fit and they were available at my FLAPS. Paul Johnson

I had the 20% louder mufflers installed in the Hawk. The sound is just right. It also has a bit more umph on acceleration. The only time you hear it is in the rear and the rumble/noise is a nice sound. The fellow who installed the system for me was amazed how easy the system went in.

I was told that the 20% louder created way less back pressure than the quiet ones offered.

I bought the stainless 2 1/4" pipes from Don Simmons for my R2 and what he calls the "semi-quiet" stainless mufflers. I've insulated the passenger cabin with Ice Guard and 1/4" aluminum backed insulation. I expect the cabin will be quieter now than it was with the "Turbo" mufflers under the front seat area of the floor but I should hear a nice Studebaker V8 rumble out the back. Don even offered to custom bend a left exhaust pipe if it doesn't clear the 200R4 properly. From what I can see the 200R4 looks to be the same width of the BW Powershift; certainly it's 3" narrower than the 700R4.

I can hardly wait to get my car back on the road but there is much to do yet...

I would just stick on a pair of Flowmasters and forget about it...

They sound good. You can drive them quiet, or loud... And they are small. (But they aren't $19.95 either...) Jeff (That's what I run...) Rice

Just in case anyone did not get the message from the tenor of all the comments:

(1) All Porsches suck, and

(2) Silvertone exhaust systems are a true quality product, and Don Simmons is a great guy to do business with. Questions about the relative volume of diferent mufflers are not a reflection on their fit or durability. This firm has a well-deserved great reputation.

They're so good, if you could put one on a Porsche you wouldn't be able to hear it rust.
