1995 Legacy (Starting Issues)

My 95 Legacy L, with 160K miles, wouldn't start today......brand new battery, purchased a couple of weeks ago, and the car has worked fine since I bought the battery. Now, when I turn the key, everything lights up, but, all I get is a "clicking" noise.....the car doesn't even try to turn-over.

Any ideas??

Best, John

The clicking sound is the solenoid (wherever its located). Check battery clamps, wires, connections to the solenoid? Of course the fact that the battery is new doesn't mean its good...already had a top of the line battery fail on me this winter after only a couple of months use (replaced under warranty).

Probably nothing more then a loose battery cable.

A subie starter has contacts in the solenoid that wear and can be replaced. that could br the problem. Generally speaking, this is all that fails on the subie starter.

Make sure the gear shift is fully in the Park position. Mine can be pulled slightly out of position the result of which is turning the ignition key and nothing happens.

Could be your starter is seized.

What's the voltage across the battery? What does it drop to when you turn the ignition switch to Start?

Hi, You sure your charging circuit is OK? Is alternator good?

When you say "will not start" does this mean the engine cranks but does not fire or when the key is turned, nothing happens? If the later, maybe that safety switch over the clutch pedal is the problem.
