My mother-in-law said the brake and battery both came on while driving under normal conditions. She also said the steering was stiff and car felt some jerking. Anyone have any idea whats up.

Sounds like your alternator belt might need adjustment as it turns the power steering pump as well. Not sure why/how that relates to the brake light coming on.
